Ông bà MSTS Sam và Rachel James đã phục vụ Chúa 54 năm với Cơ Quan Truyền Giáo Hải Ngoại của Giáo Hội Báp-tít Nam Phương. Mục sư Sam sinh ra tại thành phố Liberty, tiểu bang North Carolina. Ông tốt nghiệp từ Đại Học Wake Forest và Đại Chủng Viện Báp-tít Southeastern. Ông có bằng cử nhân, hai bằng thạc sĩ, một bằng tiến sĩ của Đại Chủng Viện Báp-tít Southeastern, Đại Học North Carolina, và Đại Học Duke. Năm 2014, ông được trường Đại Chủng Viện Báp-tít Southeastern trao giải thưởng President's Award. Bà Rachel tốt nghiệp cử nhân về y tá từ trường Đại Học Duke. Họ có bốn con, chín cháu nội ngoại. Hai người con của họ từng làm giáo sĩ ở nước ngoài.

Mục sư Sam đã làm mục sư quản nhiệm trong tiểu bang North Carolina hơn 5 năm, thành lập Hội Thánh Báp-tít Homestead Heights ở Durham, NC (bây giờ đổi tên là The Summit Church). Ông bà được phong chức giáo sĩ cho Việt Nam năm 1962. Họ phục vụ tại Việt Nam từ năm 1962 cho đến tháng tư, 1975. Trong thời gian ở Việt Nam, MS Sam đã thiết lập Thánh Kinh Học Viện Báp-tít và thành lập 6 hội thánh. Bà Rachel phụ trách các bệnh xá lưu động để giúp người tị nạn chiến tranh chung quanh vùng Sài Gòn. Sau khi miền Nam bị sụp đổ, OBMS Sam đến đảo Guam để giúp người Việt tị nạn tại đó. MS Sam được phong chức Phó Giám Đốc Truyền Giáo Đông Á (bao gồm Đại Hàn, Nhật, Đài Loan, Hồng Kông, Ma-cao, và Trung Hoa). Năm 1992, ông được phong chức Phó Chủ Tịch Truyền Giáo cho Âu Châu, Trung Đông, và Bắc Phi. Năm 1995, ông được phong chức Phó Chủ Tịch Truyền Giáo đặc trách Huấn Luyện Lãnh Đạo cho hơn 5,250 giáo sĩ toàn thế giới.

Năm 2002, Mục sư Sam nghỉ hưu các chức vụ trên để trở về Việt Nam tiếp tục công tác truyền giáo. Năm 2003, ông bà lại được bổ nhiệm đến vùng Trung Đông và Bắc Phi để làm cố vấn và tư vấn cho các giáo sĩ khi chiến tranh Iraq lần thứ hai đang xảy ra. Đồng thời với công việc này, ông cố gắng tiếp tục phục vụ tại Việt Nam, và năm 2007, ông bà được gởi đến Việt Nam toàn thời gian. Sau đó, ông thiết lập Thánh Kinh Học Viện Báp-tít, sau này đã tốt nghiệp hơn 70 mục sư và lãnh đạo. Hiện nay, Thánh Kinh Học Viện Báp-tít này đang hoạt động tại thành phố Sài Gòn và Hà Nội để huấn luyện thần học và lãnh đạo. Năm ông 83 tuổi, ông đã về hưu lần thứ hai từ Cơ Quan Truyền Giáo Hải Ngoại của Giáo Hội Báp-tít Nam Phương. Hiện nay ông đang phục vụ cho Việt Nam với tính cách tự nguyện, phụ trách cố vấn cho Tổng Hội Báp-tít Việt Nam trong lãnh vực thần học và huấn luyện lãnh đạo.

Sam and Rachel James have served with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention for 54 years. Sam was born in Liberty, North Carolina and is a graduate of Wake Forest University and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has a Bachelor’s degree, two Master’s degrees, and a doctoral degree, with biblical studies at Southeastern Seminary, University of North Carolina, and Duke University. In 2014, he was given the “President’s Award” by Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Rachel is a nurse with her BS in Nursing degree from Duke University. They have four children and nine grandchildren. Two of their children have served as overseas missionaries.

Sam served as pastor in North Carolina for 5 years, planting Homestead Heights Baptist Church in Durham, N.C. now named The Summit Church in Durham, N.C. He and Rachel were appointed missionaries to Vietnam in 1962. They served in Vietnam from 1962 until April, 1975. During their time in Vietnam, Sam founded the Vietnam Baptist Theological Seminary and planted 6 churches.  Rachel supervised a mobile clinic ministering in refugee areas in and around Saigon during the war.

After the collapse of Vietnam, Sam served on Guam with Vietnam refugees. Sam was elected Associate Director for East Asia with headquarters in Taiwan until 1980. He was called to Richmond, Virginia to design the training programs for missionaries going overseas, working with architects to design the training center.  In 1985, he was elected Director for East Asia (Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and the People’s Republic of China).  In 1992, he was elected Overseas Vice President for Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.  In 1995, he was named Overseas Vice President for Leadership Development for the 5,250 missionaries serving around the world.

In 2002, Sam retired as Vice President in order to return to overseas missionary service in Vietnam.  In 2003, he and Rachel were asked to transfer to The Middle East and North Africa to serve during second Iraq War as counselor and advisor for missionaries. At the same time, he continued to serve periodically in Vietnam, and in 2007, he returned to Vietnam on a full time basis. During that time, he founded the Vietnam Baptist Bible Institute which at the present time has graduated more than 70 church leaders and church planters. It now operates two centers for theological training and leadership development in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. At the age of 83, he retired a second time from the International Mission Board. He currently serves in Vietnam as a volunteer, serving as advisor on theological education and leadership development.
